Al Ristorante ed al Bar
If you have been to Italy, you probably know that Italians love having their breakfast at the café every morning. “Fare colazione al bar” is a morning ritual you can’t miss when you visit Italy. Here are a few phrases you might find useful. And remember: “a coffee” is “un caffè” and “a café” is instead “un bar” … and if you want a croissant, you will order “un cornetto” in Central and Southern Italy but “una brioche” in Northern Italy!
At the restaurant do you want a “starter” to begin your dinner, then you need to look for “un antipasto“.
In Italy we use to have two main courses: the “first course” is called “il primo” normally comes with pasta, rise or soup then the “second course” called “il secondo” brings meat or fish with vegetable, potato or polenta as “a side” called “il contorno“. Remember to order your dessert “il dolce“. A “cake” is called “una torta” or a coffe “un caffè“. Strange enough, we don’t order “un cappuccino” after 11 a.m., but if you do that, you can enjoy it after this time, however you don’t lie enough well to be Italian!
